Sculpture Grades 6-12

Your Art Curriculum for the Middle and High School Student

(Elementary can do projects with parent help, older students work independently.)

"The illustrated instructions are clear and include all the details needed for success. I like the tips such as what to do when the pulp gets thin, and where to let the pieces dry, and for how long." -Jennifer Grunmeier

"I really like that in this program students learn the processes involved in using a variety of materials. They truly become a creator and sculptor by implementing the methods described in this book." - Kathryn C. cumminslife.blogspot.com

Are there times when you get the urge to make something with your hands? You want to be free of the assignments that tell you exactly what to do and how to get the right answer. This is the time to construct a sculpture. Using the construction method while making a sculpture gives you unique opportunities to react intuitively. Construction is an additive process where materials like wood, plastics, and metals are joined together using any number of devises such as nails, adhesives, and staples. This book explains the processes involved in using many different materials including paper, cardboard, discarded plastics, newspaper, and wire. You will select subjects to create, using the methods shown. In this book you are the creator, You are a sculptor. * Brenda Ellis * Publisher: Artistic Pursuits Inc. * Comb-binding, 83 pages, * ISBN:978-1-939394-10-1 published January 31, 2014

LOOK INSIDE- VIEW A LESSON

Sculpture Technique, CONSTRUCT offers students, upper elementary to high school, the opportunity to discover their own creative strengths in the world of three-dimensions. This book is the first of its kind to bring the processes and concepts of construction methods in papermaking, papier-mâché, cardboard and wire into the home environment. Unlike craft books, the assignments in this book focus on processes of working with specific materials while introducing the elements of sculpture in ways students can put into practice immediately. Students work as sculptors, creating original sculptures while selecting subject matter that is interesting and relevant to their own lives.

Unit Evaluation: Students reflect on their accomplishments as they complete an evaluation page. They examine how the element of sculpture was used in their completed sculptures , reflect on technical issues, and consider the subject of fine arts as it relates to their completed sculptures within the unit. Answers are provided at the back of the book. This evaluation together with the completed sculptures provides a number grade for each unit.

Media Introduced:

paper making, cardboard construction, paper-mache, wire.

Course Credits

Visual Arts Courses: A credit depends on the amount of time spent on the course. Students should keep track of hours for planning and sketching, observing sculptures on trips to museums and parks, reading the text and additional reading and investigation, project time and any additional projects initiated by the student in media of putty, pottery, or fiber arts.

Course Name: Sculpture ONE | 1 credit

Course Text: Sculpture Technique, CONSTRUCT by Brenda Ellis

Course Description: The fundamentals of sculpture (FORM, PLANES, MOTION, AND VOLUME) are emphasized through examples, artwork by contemporary sculptors, and projects in papermaking, architectural construction with cardboard, papier mache, and wire. Critical analysis of artwork is stressed in the application of these fundamentals. Various media, tools, and building techniques are explored.
