The Power of a Story

When we tell about the artist through story, children forge connections between the artist's world and their own. Stories are especially engaging for kindergarten and early elementary students. Stories convey culture, history, and values. Stories engage and promote understanding of why the artist produced artworks in a particular style or preferred subject matter. 

Stories expand a child's view of the possibilities when making his or her own art. 

In our K-3 books, a brief introduction to the story sets the stage, while asking your child to think about a particular aspect of his own life experience. Allow your child to stop, think, and share their thoughts. Next the story is read to the student. The story is followed by a discussion around the artist's artwork, leading into the child's project, where your child has opportunity to share their experience through art.
